Infra-Brigade SoS Dialling Number
Infrastructure Directory Enlisting of the Infra-Squad of licensed labourers, contractors, engineers, upgrading them as qualified professionals and personal development of Indian construction service providers.

"Jaan Hai Toh Jahan Hai" meaning- You are, hence the world is.

You national citizens are the backbone for creation. You are the reason for generation of architects. Reason for architecture and infrastructure is to provide shelter, safety and security. Congratulations for your immense contribution to the society. Any industry that you belong to, we know that we belong to each other and your consistent commitment is worthy to salute. Thank you for always being warm, spirited and supportive. Thank you for your interest in Project “Jaan Hai Toh Jahan Hai”.

What is possible?

#ProjectJHJH will create safe and secure, casualty-free infrastructure for India.

Current Scenario

What is so right now, Current Scenario
What is so right now about this area is- Being an architect, I notice two extreme facets of architectural world- One facet dwells in the romanticism of architectural industry and ambition about development, while the other facet is- ignorance, manipulation of the law, accidents, like #PuneHoarding #ElphinstoneBridge #GhatkoparBuildingCollapse #KamalaMillsFire.
The architects and engineers have the safety and security protocol in the bye-laws included in curriculum for graduation, they are aware. Do they practise? Facts unknown. Today apart from licensed engineers, unqualified contractors take up the civil work of renovation, construction, erection of tall structures as of hoardings, consequently they critically damage lives. Untrained, uneducated men & women become labourers as they are offered these jobs and dealing with poverty they take these up, landing up in risk of their lives.
Safety protocols are on the books but are not always in action during construction, maintenance, renovation, repairs and demolishing of structures. fires and collapses are on news often. As the urban areas develop, the feasibility of infrastructure is not measured, which causes non-feasibility, breakdown causing casualties.
Untrained designers demolish columns for creating larger spaces (Entire Navaray apartment at Sion collapsed, breaking many families). Labourer dying during repair at sites due to lack of safety gear, harness. Due to lack of residential building maintenance, women who step into grill box for cleaning and fall down from window grill, leading to fatal injuries, critical damages like losing eyes or even dying. Holding large parties on terraces damages structure leading to cracks causing corrosion of the steel structural members, in addition to people falling off from the parapet walls.

Where? Right outside the Prospect Chamber, Fort, Mumbai When? 31st March 2017 at 2.35 pm What? Architect Zaha Hadid passed away the last year on 31st March. This year on the very fated date, the dignitary architects, from all over India, attending Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) election at its Prospect Chamber Office in Fort, do not know what they have missed! On the top floor of the building opposite to Prospect Chamber, sliding window was getting repaired, with total negligence of the carpenter towards suitable safety measures, the translucent textured glass pane 3ft wide x 4ft tall x 5mm thick, along with its brown coated aluminium frame, fell with a heavy shattering sound, right on the busy street, causing danger to the passersby. While walking the very narrow lane, being 2 meters past the incident, I remained stumped. A decent lady doctor, a professional owner at that location, walking on the footpath adjacent Prospect Chambers witnessing the whole incident, described it to a Police man (as security hired by IIA) at the entrance of Prospect Chamber, but he continued to remain on the call on his cell phone, as well as neglected the whole description.

My parents survived steel members falling off from skywalk construction site due to usage of unfit nets instead of structurally viable safety mesh and I am a survivor of sliding window glass pane that fell 2 ft behind me at Fort, South Mumbai. Minor negligence leading to unforgivable mishaps and we are survived by the luck factor.
Today, unqualified contractors and carpenters are hired at cheaper rates by residents and their sheer negligence puts life of themselves as well as of people around- at stake. People fall off of heights- plumbers fall off due to water pressure, labourer stepping out of the window playing risk to repair split-ac fall off kids play on window grills fall apart, glass panes flying off of the facades and sliding windows, are all excused.
Malpractices and material adulteration are ongoing even after proper specifications mentioned, that means we need some greater action to cause safety mentions on by-law books into action.

What we will be left with, without this project is:

If no action is taken, due to lack of safety protocols in place, the predictable future is that, anybody could be the next. The integrity of architects, engineers and construction professionals is into question when structural and functional integrity is amiss. Then is it still valid that we call ourselves architects? Unpredictable deaths due to silly reasons of ignorance is India's future. Hence, I invite you to come together, brainstorm your ideas, choose the action.
Rightly put by Prof. Ar. Umesh Luktuke - “If proper care is not taken we are living by chance, facing the mistakes of people in construction business, and totally surviving by the grace of god.” Lets leave what cannot be done to chance since amidst all the geniuses, a certain upgrade in society is very possible, and time is up to make it mandatory.

With Your Participation as the Leader for Project JHJH

If we infrastructurists- the creators and users of infrastructure hold ourselves accountable and offer the best possibility that we can, then we have a new future of safe and secure, casualty-free infrastructure for India. We are responsible for creating safe and secure, casualty-free infrastructure for India, hence it is very important to participate in any way and every way. Share experiences, suggestions, feedback, ideate, act. Where ideas for action become the actions.

My enquiry to myself and sharing my discovery- How we can bring safety in action?

It is possible for creation of 'Infra-Brigade sos dialling number', that reaches out to-'Infra-Squad' of trained licensed labourers, contractors, architects. I invite each educational institute for honorary space provision plus every professional in construction industry to devote service one hour per week to train the labourers, test and license them. Create a licensed Infrastructure Community and include their names in the Infra Brigade directory. Thus working from the roots- the labourers’ development and surely causing a safe and secure developed nation.
Reaching out for awareness for the residents in society-meetings via secretaries of all buildings of India via creating ‘Building Secretary Body' for the basic know how of structural member functions.
This body also includes training in disaster management. To recall a few.. These days granite door frames are constructed and it is not viable to stand under this for safety measures. Considering fire exits as they renovate homes. We can spread this stand for safety in our architecture fraternity and come together with oneness to deal this with powerful actions in smart and fool proof directions.
Need of the hour: An institute that creates quality architects, builders, civil engineers, contractors, carpenters. Now India needs that qualitative awareness and training to carry out secure work manners and ethics especially on the facades, or on any civil structure overlooking streets, also to appreciate the value each life carries and take high-end safety measures on the sites. An institute that-
1> Designs the training for individuals in industry for safety-security sensitivity,
registers and licenses the qualified. Maintains database of the same and helps networking. Trained workers need to be given licenses and only those need to be hired to carry any major or minor works.
2> Tying up with higher authorities, designs surveillance body that looks after the site to properly carry out any civil works in each and every bye-laws scenario.
3> Designs and conducts workshops to be carried in every society to fulfill education to layman so to respect function rather than abuse or oversee the limitations of building elements. For example, to not misuse the of box grills, or to not construct of concrete over head water tanks upon the terrace slab, so on and so forth. Explaining reasons, we can educate the residents to improve the building quality and life.
4> Building maintenance and society secretary body to examine the risks and take action- to check whether elements are not worn out and replace whatever is needed to. Worn out nuts and bolts need not be the reason for grills to fly off of facades and cause casualties.
5> Etcetera support to be provided for better functioning; Ideas and inputs can be discussed within conducted board meeting/event and online platform (for example, a subsection on IIA website or independently) to post updates and those who cannot attend physically can post their views thus, each one can contribute their thoughts and participate.
This will improve the individuals’ lifestyle, environment of our architecture industry and the interconnected dimensions of building, construction, maintenance and repair. This will in turn help contribution to the economy of our country leaps and bounds by saving lives of many and make our country a happy, safe and secure place to live in. Money lost can be made again but life lost is an irreversible loss. Hence, every body must invest up on proper training and education to impart sensitivity and sensibility towards structures before taking up jobs- major or minor, including respective awareness to residents or users on how to best use the building.
